Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a type of surgical technique that is performed through small incisions unlike tradtional open surgery where large incisions are done. In MIS, specialised instruments and a tiny camera are inserted through small incisions in the body to access the surgical site. The surgeon is able to perform the procedure with great precision and accuracy through the use of the camera which provides a magnified view of the surgical site on a monitor.
Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive than traditional surgery as the surgeon will make small incisions on the sugical site instead of large ones in traditional surgery. Special instruments including a tiny camera will be inserted through the small incisions for the surgeon to perform the procedure safely and accurately.
The robotic approach to surgery consists of using a robot system, such as the da Vinci Surgical System, to assist the surgeon in performing the procedure. The surgeon sits at the console and operates the robot, with a patient cart that holds the robotic arms and instruments. The robotic arms are designed to mimic the movements of the surgeon’s hands with greater precision and range of motion. The benefits of this type of surgery includes greater accuracy, smaller incisions and reduced infection and blood loss.
MIS offers many benefits over traditional open surgery, including less scaring (due to smaller incisions), reduced pain level, lower risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, and faster recovery times. Minimally invasive surgery is a safe and common procedure used in many surgical procedures, including gynecological, gastrointestinal, cardiac, orthopedic, and urological surgeries.
